An arrest has befallen a Brazilian lady after she casually strode into a bank maneuvering a dead body she expected to secure a loan for her.

Sobering footage, attained by bank staff in the Bangu area of Rio De Janeiro, presents Erika de Souza Vieira Nunes ushering the body of Paulo Roberto Braga into the bank location, The Daily Beast revealed.

Braga had perished merely a few hours earlier at the age of 68.

In the recorded material, Ms Nunes is allegedly heard addressing Braga as her uncle while she communicated with the deceased and adjusted his head.

She petitioned him to co-sign a loan amounting to around $3,400, The New York Post reported.

Ms Nunes Pressures the Corpse to Sign

“Uncle, are you paying attention? You have to sign [the paperwork]. If you don’t sign, there’s no arrangement, because I can’t sign on your behalf,” Ms Nunes communicates in the footage.

She procures a pen and thrusts it into the dead man’s fist, instructing the body to grasp the pen “firmly”.

“Sign so you don’t cause me further dilemmas, I can’t bear it anymore,” she says.

Throughout the recording, an employee observes that the man appears ill and his complexion is abnormal, but Ms Nunes dismisses his worries.

“He is like that. He remains silent,” Ms Nunes responds. “Uncle, do you aspire to revisit the [hospital] once more?”

The bank associates finally reached out to the authorities.

Responding to the call, the police and paramedics discovered that Ms Nunes had been wheeling a dead man in a wheelchair during her consultation.

An Unexpected Visit Turns to Detainment

Telling police that she was the man’s niece, Ms Nunes was apprehended at the scene. Now, she might face charges encompassing fraud, misappropriation, and ill-treatment of a corpse.

“She endeavored to fabricate his consent to sign the loan. He was already expired when he entered the bank,” Police Superintendent Fábio Luiz disclosed to TV Globo, a prevalent Brazilian broadcaster.

The Investigation

While an inquiry into the nature of Braga’s death is ongoing, it’s still uncertain whether Ms Nunes is indeed his niece, or if there’s anyone else linked to them attempting to engage in bank fraud, the police added to their comments.

Local Bangu authorities made it known to The Independent that Ms Nunes was taken into custody and charged with fraud and desecration of a corpse.

“The elderly man’s body will undergo analysis at the Legal Medical Institute (IML), to identify the cause of his death. Representatives will conduct investigations to shine light on the circumstances and hear witnesses,” a police spokesperson elaborated.

Ms Nunes’ attorney, Ana Carla de Souza Correa, asserts that Braga was alive upon entering the bank.

“The occurrences did not take place as depicted. Paul was alive when he arrived at the bank,” Ana Carla de Souza Correa, Ms Nunes’ attorney reported to journalists.

“We believe in Érika’s innocence. Everything will be clarified soon.”
