If you were enticed to enroll in a for-profit college that may have deceived you, you could qualify for for-profit student loan forgiveness programs like Borrower Defense to Repayment. Over recent years, more than $1 billion in student loan debt has been absolved for students who graduated from for-profit colleges or other institutions that might have misled them.

The foundations for student loan forgiveness encompass borrower defense to repayment claims, school closures, and other lawsuits.

The Biden Administration holds the record for forgiving the most student loan debt of any administration, with several new announcements aiding over 200,000 borrowers.

Nonetheless, determining if you qualify for loan forgiveness can be tricky. Below is a compendium of colleges that are eligible for student loan forgiveness under borrower defence to repayment, the recent Sweet v. Cardona settlement, or other loan abrogation agreements with the Department of Education. Refer to this guide on How To Get Help For Your Loans If You Were Defrauded By Your College for extra assistance.

Editor’s Note: This article has been modified to emphasize that not all schools on this list are for-profit institutions. Some schools may have transitioned from a for-profit status to a non-profit one.

List of Institutions Eligible for Borrower Defence Student Loan Forgiveness

Over 155 educational institutions possibly qualify for student loan forgiveness under several schemes and settlements – the most up-to-date being the proposed settlement of Sweet v. Cardona. However, several of the “owner” names do not coincide with their respective college names. Hence we will add the individual school names here eventually.

Note: Despite the college you attended, not all students will qualify. You must still meet the requirements for either borrower defense or closed school discharge. Yet, for certain schools, all borrowers will be eligible.

For instance, Corinthian Colleges settled, but the actual school names are Everest, WyoTech, and others. As a result, borrowers might be confused about qualifying for certain programs.

In the following list, we document the parent company name followed by the names of the associated schools. Some of these institutions may have transitioned from a for-profit status to a non-profit one.

Disclaimer: Several institutions on this catalog were formerly for-profit schools, and have since transitioned to non-profit status. They may have also been managed by different parent companies or been known by other names initially. Institutions now considered non-profit are marked with an asterisk (*).

    Procuring Loan Forgiveness

The two prominent programmes that provide assistance are:

The Borrower Defense To Repayment program endeavors to cancel a student’s federal loans if the college has violated federal or state laws or has substantially misrepresented facts about a student’s loans or the educational services that the loans paid for. If a student qualifies for this program, their federal student loans will be cancelled and all former payments refunded to them.

Closed School Discharges: If a college shuts down while a student is enrolled or within 180 days after the student’s withdrawal, the student may be eligible for a closed school discharge of their federal student loans if they cannot complete their schooling through a continuation of instruction or through credit transfer to another school.

It’s pivotal to bear in mind that these loan forgiveness programmes only apply to Federal student loans. If you have private student loans, no particular student loan forgiveness programmes are available to assist you. However, numerous lawsuits and settlements have resulted in the dismissal of several private loans associated with these schools.

Recently, Navient agreed to forgive $1.7 billion in private student loans for 66,000 borrowers who had withdrawn from for-profit colleges. Previously, Corinthian Colleges had agreed to discharge private Genesis loans for students who had attended their schools.

    Legal Updates

Several objections have been filed followed by the approval of the Sweet v. Cardona settlement, leaving borrowers feeling stuck since 2022.

In November 2022, the judge presiding over the case approved the settlement agreement. However, the group representing the schools vowed to contest this judgment.

In February 2023, the judge briefly stalled loan forgiveness. But by May, the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals authorized loan forgiveness to go ahead.

By August 2023, the Education Department had directed loan servicers to discharge the debts of over 128,000 class members, and additional members have seen their loans forgiven subsequently.

In January 2024, the first members of the class began to receive their settlements.

    Next Steps

If you believe you qualify, your loan servicer should have informed you, or will inform you. However, if your contact information is not updated, you may not receive notification.

Therefore, you should complete the application for the Borrower Defense To Repayment Discharge at studentaid.gov/borrower-defence/

Notice: Many scams are exploiting the names of these schools to get you to pay for help in processing your student loan forgiveness claims. You don’t have to pay – you can complete all these steps for free using the legitimate website StudentAid.gov. Check out our list of common student loan scams for more information.
