The Enforcement Directorate (ED) launched searches at the various residences of Haryana Congress MLA, Rao Dan Singh, and his family, along with a metallurgy enterprise, and its owners, in connection with an alleged bank loan deception case worth Rs 1,392 crore.
Rao Dan Singh, a law degree holder and entrepreneur, has won the Mahendragarh constituency for the Indian Congress Party four times.
Raid teams from the ED searched Singh’s abode, agrarian property, the premises of a metal fabricating establishment called Allied Strips Limited (ASL) and its initiators, Mohinder Agrawal and Gaurav Agrawal, among others. The ED conducted probes in around 15 locales such as Mahendragarh, Bahadurgarh, Rewari, Gurugram, Delhi, and Jamshedpur. The ED probe revealed that Rao Dan Singh’s family and companies took loans from ASL that were subsequently written-off.
At the age of 68, Singh, has been a supporter of the state Congress leader and former Chief Minister, Bhupinder Singh Hooda, who is currently serving as the Leader of Opposition in the state Assembly.
Rao Singh participated in the recent General Elections from Bhiwani-Mahendragarh constituency. However, he lost to Dharambir Singh, the sitting MP from BJP, by a margin of 41,510 votes.
Singh stated that he didn’t face criminal charges and declared his assets worth Rs 18.04 crore in an affidavit submitted to the Election Commission for the General elections.
Singh first won from Mahendragarh in 2000, breaking four consecutive terms of victory of BJP veteran Rambilas Sharma since 1982.
Singh has now defeated Sharma thrice including their most recent face-off in the 2019 election. In the upcoming Assembly election scheduled for October this year, Singh is expected to represent Congress from his stronghold.
Singh received his LLB from Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri College, Jaipur in 1980 and his MBA degree from the University of Rajasthan in 1983. Singh and his wife Sandhya run fuel and automobile service stations in Mahendragarh and Gurgaon. Singh also served as the Haryana Football Association president in 2012.
Singh’s son, Akshat, faced direct attacks from the ruling BJP and then Congress leaders Kiran Choudhry and Shruti Choudhry during the General Election due to Akshat’s involvement in the Adarsh Credit Co-operative Society scam. Both Kiran and Shruti have since left Congress and joined BJP.
