In the regions of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi, a trio of individuals were ensnared by the deceptive pitfalls of online scams. Altogether, victims faced a staggering loss tallying to Rs 16.8 lakh.

One victim stated he was conned out of Rs 6.6 lakh due to a fraudulent coupon. He was informed that he had won a Meesho cash prize of Rs 14.8 lakh in April of this year. The coupon also included a phone number which he called.

The person on the other end asked for the victim’s bank particulars and identification card. The victim, unsuspecting, imparted these details via WhatsApp. He later received a instruction to send money for sundry charges to lay claim to the cash reward. He was bilked of Rs 6.6 lakh in the process. This scam has led to the filing of a legal case under Sections 66(C) and 66(D) of the IT Act.

The second case involves a female victim who was hoodwinked by an online job scam. She was accosted on the Telegram app while looking for a remote work position. Subsequently, she was deceived into transferring Rs 9.2 lakh into various accounts. This incident occurred in various stages from April 11 onward. The Bantwal Town police has registered a case under Sections 66(C) and 66(D) of the IT Act in response to her complaint.

Another woman in Udupi was also ensnared by a job scam, resulting in a loss of Rs 95,000. The complainant reveals that her daughter was approached by fraudsters on Telegram, fooled into the lure of a job opportunity. Her daughter transferred Rs 70,000 from her mother’s account and Rs 25,000 from her own fund between June 10 and 15. The Bramhavar police station has registered a case under Section 66(D) of the IT Act.
