Established in 1865, the U.S. Secret Service’s time-honored mission has been to protect America’s financial and payment structures from unlawful exploitation. This mission originated to deal with the sudden influx of counterfeit currency following the Civil War. As the nation’s financial structure has evolved – transitioning from paper money to credit cards and now digital information – our investigative duties have correspondingly expanded and shifted.

In the contemporary era, our agents, specialists, and professionals are stationed in various field offices globally to counter financial crimes of the 21st century, many of which are primarily conducted via cyberspace. Despite the continued threat of counterfeit negatively impacting faith in the U.S. dollar, the bulk of Secret Service investigations has shifted to contemporary cybercrimes such as credit card deception, bank and wire fraud, security breaches of computer networks, ransomware, and other cyber-related financial crimes.
