PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — U.S. Attorney Zachary Cunha said an Indiana woman was indicted by a R.I. federal grand jury for her role in an online romance scam.
According to court documents, Brittany Lasley, 32, of Anderson Indiana allegedly defrauded a 96-year-old Coventry widower of $80,000.
The indictment alleged that Lasley made a fake “Plenty of Fish” dating profile and used it to lure in the widower.
Lasley is alleged to have also pretended to be the victim’s daughter to gain access to his credit card.
Court documents show Lasley led the widower to believe that giving her money would result in a romantic relationship.
Officials say Lasley is facing five charges of wire-fraud and one count of aggravated identity theft.
Indiana officials said Lasley is currently in state custody on unrelated charges.
