Meridian, Idaho, March 22, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — CBH Homes, Idaho’s premier real estate developer which also oversee rental properties through CBH Rentals, is sending out a distress signal pertaining to the growing instances of rental frauds across the country particularly those centered around newly constructed homes up for sale. Unethical individuals prey on unsuspecting renters, leading to considerable financial loss and posing a risk to their personal safety. CBH is committed to raising awareness to help individuals steer clear of such scams.

“I was deceived by a rental scam. I showed interest in a seemingly underpriced house for rent, which soon turned out to be indeed ‘too good to be true’,” Lauren, a victim, disclosed to CBH. “On attempting to tour the premises, the access code shared for the door failed. Subsequently, they requested for an ID verification and sent a new working code. Given our dire need for a place to move into and my entire family being there, we were left with no choice. On questioning the presence of a ‘For Sale’ sign, I was informed that they are attempting a rent-to-buy scheme. The instance was incredibly exasperating and deeply disconcerting.”

Typically, the swindlers create fraudulent advertisements of saleable homes being up for rent. They often swipe the pictures from the builder’s websites and create phony listings on various platforms.

“CBH Homes has noticed a rising trend in rental cons and we are putting in our best efforts to alert the public regarding scam red flags,” says Ronda Conger, Vice President of CBH Homes, underscoring the importance of staying vigilant. “With the aim to contain the issue, we are introducing advanced signage on houses, identifying and eliminating fraudulent listings promptly, and enhancing the security features of our self-guided tour app.”

So, how can people protect themselves from scams? “We aim to make it absolutely clear. All CBH homes carry branded ‘For Sale’ signage by CBH Homes. Additionally, there will also be signage indicating that the house is not available for rent,” says Conger. “We are also boosting the safety features of our self-guided tour app. Users should expect real-time identity verification requests.”

To follow are some preventive measures against falling prey to such fraudulent practices:

  • Scrutinize the listings for any faults or inconsistencies. Does the rent appear too good to be true? If so, chances are it is. Are there grammatical errors or misinformation pertaining to the location or property type, which can be verified simply by a quick drive-by? Such inaccuracies are alarm bells hinting at foul play.
  • Search for the mentioned address on Google. It is essential to ensure the existence of the property as advertised and if there’s any related information available online.
  • Don’t process the payment until you are entirely sure. Even when everything seems right, you should be wary of requests for money transfers. Remember, money-transferring apps such as Zelle, Venmo, PayPal operate just like cash i.e., once the money’s gone, it’s gone. CBH Homes strongly discourages sending personal data, particularly driver’s license details, via text messages. Genuine transactions and property tours will be processed through secured channels.
  • Take a closer look at the “for Sale” signs. A “For Sale” sign on the lawn indicates the property is on the market, not up for rent. Always be wary of renting offers for homes carrying sale signs.
  • By staying well-informed and cautious, individuals can safeguard themselves from becoming victims of such fraudulent schemes.
