COLUMBIA − Ameren is warning customers of an increase in online scams targeting its customers in Missouri and Illinois.
The electric company said there has been a growing number of fraudulent website listings that scammers develop to mimic Ameren’s website. The site includes fake phone numbers and email addresses.
According to Ameren, the fake website listings appear on internet searches, which customers often search to speak to a representative, pay their bill or change service.
The search may provide several legitimate looking websites, but once the customer calls the fake number or clicks on a fake link. Once contacted, the scammer will appear authentic by asking for account information or requesting payment through a cash payment app.
“Unfortunately, these scammers continue to find new tactics to trick utility customers into providing payments to them or by obtaining their personal information,” Maria Gomez, security supervisor for Ameren, said. “As new technology and the use of digital products increase, so do opportunities for these thieves to deceive our customers.”
Ameren encourages customers to go directly to Ameren.com or call 1-800-552-7583.
